What Makes Rollerbots Unique?
Rollerbots are cartoon characters that are unique in that they were not emulated from or inspired by any other robot, science fiction movie, or fantasy characters. Although Star Wars had just been released about two years earlier and I really liked the character of R2-D2, it did not inspire the creation of the Rollerbots.
The Rollerbots were actually based on circles and the curves of my VW bug that I drove. The stick shift at the back of the Rollerbot was inspired by the stick shift in the car.
Originally they were a school comic strip entitled “Out of this World,” and they were only three inches tall. After the second year they went from 3 inches to 3 feet high. At this point if there was any inspiration from R2-D2, it would only be the height. I felt that having them be about the size of a small child would allow them to more easily interact with the world around them.
The first Rollerbots in 1979 stood only three inches tall.
Rollerbots are based on the circles and curves of creator Arnulfo's VW bug of the 1970's.
Rollerbots AJ3 and AJ7 are based on creator Arnulfo and his wife Alisa.
